I think I should probably try to do more 'flowy' stuff in my work like I did with the hair and other parts on this. I quite like to do flowy stuff like that actually.
Anyway just something that popped up in my head. Wanted to do something with a kind of tribal theme. I had a dream too and thought of working these masks into the story within it.
Something about a girl who wants to help a group of ghosts pass on. But first she needs to resolve the issues that are holding them down on earth. And to do that she must pass into the land between earth and 'the other side', like limbo land or something. I felt that on earth the ghosts appear as they did on earth (before they became a ghost) but not without any real solidity to them of course, but in 'limbo land' they have a more solid form but their identity is covered by these masks etc. Those who have more aggressive burdens holding them down on earth (like seeking revenge etc.) have predator type masks. And those with more passive issues, like wanting to keep watch over someone, have prey masks. And of course the two don't get on very well! The heavier the burden on their mind, the heavier the masks, as such those with serious burdens cannot remove the mask at all. Well something like that anyway.
As with alot of my story ideas I'll probably just play around with it in my head but might do some still illustrations based on the concept if something else crops up in my mind...
Wow! I love your story analogy! It's really a fascinating and creative idea. I wish you luck with it and hope you develop it further. As for the image, it's very Tim Burton (i.e. The Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands)... by the way it is both shocking and macabre but beautiful and flowing at the same time. I noticed this first when I saw the clouds in particular. And you're right, the flowing nature of the drawing lends it an almost surreal atmosphere which compliments the idea perfectly. I imagine music playing a big part in your idea, becuase I see the two characters' interactions like a kind of ghost dance.
If you want to help yourself along with the idea I find the best way is to find some music that suits your theme and listen to it whilst watching/drawing your images. In time you will find the image comes to life and almost dances around in your head. In terms of music I would recommend pretty much the soundtrack to any Tim Burton film (becuase he mostly chooses Danny Elfman, one of my favourite composers): Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, they're all good.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post such wonderful and indepth feedback I really appreciate it and it gives me a great boost. I'm glad you like the overall image. I'm thinking of trying to turn it into a style perhaps. Just need to figure out a style for the eyes when they're in view (I'd like to have a style that isn't anime just to have an alternative to turn to for those who aren't fond of anime. So I need to be careful about the eyes hehe)
I'm glad you like the story idea. I think to realise it in some solid form I'd probably simplify it down and make it into some kind of interactive visual novel rather than a full-blown comic. One thing I always find difficult though is filling in the gaps. Like I think up alot of random images/scenes like battles or landscapes etc. but to make a proper story you need to tie all that together in some kind of reasoned way heh. I've got various story ideas in my head that are just a string of seemingly unrelated imagery/scenes. I think I'd have to maybe look into psychology or something, because the game would have to be about helping people solve their personal issues so as to free themself from that inbetween land and I'd want to give that some depth I guess rather than 'make person A meet person B'. I'd not want to be preachy either.
I've already thought up a few extra things about some kind of power struggle to do with the necklace in the image too I think so I will write all this down and see if I can pull it together someday.
Thats interesting you mention Tim Burton. I had someone recently say some of my stuff reminded them of Tim Burton I really like Tim Burton's artwork (I got the Corpse Bride artbook) so I'm not complaining hehe And of course his films are all really creative etc.
Thats a nice idea about a haunting melody for a battle scene as opposed to something more actiony. It would lend a mysterious quality to it which would fit a battle in a ghostly land.
I like your idea about music. I listen to alot of instrumental music and music in foreign languages since I feel that the music has a voice of its own and can speak to you even without actual words (sometimes even if I understand the lyrics I still ignore them and focus on the overall sound Especially if the lyrics are kindly lacking in the inspiration department heh). I have imagined up some random action scenes based on some music too. I've thought about sitting down and just churning out a bunch of random images based on music. So I will definitely take your reccomendation to heart.
Thanks again, your kind comments are of great support
